Free Tamagotchi crochet pattern: create a custom filet crochet tapestry

Elliyah Dyson

Tamagotchi lovers unite! ⭐️ If you're looking for a beginner-friendly, free filet crochet project, this customisable Tamagotchi tapestry might just be the perfect one for you. Using basic crochet techniques (filet crochet is worked up using chain and double crochet stitches), you’ll be able to transform your favourite Tamagotchi sprite into a fun tapestry.

This free downloadable guide will help you create a custom Tamagotchi tapestry. In this example, I made an ode to Kuchipatchi, but the editable guide gives you the freedom to customise it with your favourite character. It contains 50+ different Tamagotchi sprites, including Mametchi, Oyajitchi, Memetchi, Mimitchi, Ginjirotchi and more.

Step 1: Download and Customise the Pixel Pattern

Start by downloading the free crochet guide, which you can find here.

Inside the file you'll find:

  • The original pixel patterns: one for the Tamagotchi case, and one for all Tamagotchi characters
  • Links to StitchFiddle, where you can edit the pixel pattern and insert your favourite character
  • Instructions for modifying the design to replace the existing sprite with your favourite character
  • Basic filet crochet instructions
  • Blocking instructions for your tapestry

The included StitchFiddle resources make editing the graph straightforward, even if you've never altered a crochet chart before.

Just a few example of the 50+ pixel sprites you can use for your tapestry.

Step 2: Gather Your Materials

Before you begin crocheting, collect the following supplies:

Materials List

  • Lace weight yarn (approximately 22 grams)
  • 1.25 mm crochet hook
  • Scissors

Because this project uses a relatively small amount of yarn, it's a great stash-busting crochet project.

Step 3: Start Filet Crocheting

This pattern uses filet crochet to create the pixel-art effect. The guide includes beginner-friendly instructions to help you get started. If you already know how to:

  • Chain
  • Double crochet

you should be able to complete this project successfully.

Filet crochet is an excellent technique for transforming pixel graphics into crochet fabric because each stitch works like an individual pixel within the design.

Step 4: Crochet the Complete Pixel Pattern

Once you've mastered the basic stitch pattern, continue working through the chart row by row.

Take your time and periodically compare your work to the graph to ensure your sprite is developing correctly. Watching the pixel image appear as you crochet is such a rewarding part of the project!

Tips for Success

  • Count stitches carefully
  • Use stitch markers if needed
  • Check your chart frequently
  • Maintain consistent tension throughout the project

Step 5: Block Your Finished Crochet Piece

After completing the graph pattern, blocking is an important finishing step.

Blocking helps:

  • Straighten edges
  • Improve stitch definition
  • Enhance the appearance of the pixel design
  • Prepare the piece for assembly and framing

Detailed blocking instructions are included in the downloadable guide, which you can find here.

Step 6: Frame Your Finished Piece

Once your crochet tapestry is blocked and dry, it's ready to show off to the world! I’m still on the hunt for a frame that’ll fit my project properly, but once I do, I’m going to hang it up in my office as a little reminder of what my hands can make.

I’d love to see if you do the same! You can send pictures of your finished piece to my email (devouthand@gmail.com) 🩷
