FAQ
How do I get started with crochet?
Getting started with crochet is easy and fun! I’ve written an in-depth guide for complete crochet beginners to help you on your way. In short:
Gather supplies – You’ll need a crochet hook (size H/5mm is a good beginner size), yarn (medium-weight yarn like worsted is great for beginners), a tapestry needle and scissors.
Learn basic stitches – Start with the foundation chain, single crochet (sc), and double crochet (dc). Many online tutorials and videos can help.
Practice tension – Keeping an even tension while crocheting is important for neat stitches.
Start with simple projects – For your first project, I’d recommend making something small like a (set of) coasters or a simple bag. There are plenty of beginner-friendly crochet patterns you can find online to practice your stitches and improve your skills.
Once you have the basics down, it is very easy to build upon them and create more complex projects. Your crochet skills will increase exponentially with each project you complete.
Are your patterns beginner friendly?
Short answer is: yes! I strive to make my crochet patterns as beginner friendly as possible. This means each crochet pattern contains detailed written instructions, linked guides and tutorials for all techniques used, and clearvisual guides such as progress photos, pixel patterns and/or crochet charts.
Plus, each pattern purchase comes with full customer support from yours truly. If you have a question about any of my designs, feel free to send me a message via the contact form below.
What materials do I need to start crocheting?
Not much! The most important things you’ll need to start crocheting, are a crochet hook and a skein of yarn. Make sure that the weight of your yarn matches the size of your hook. For example, if you’re using a medium weight yarn (also known as worsted or aran), you’ll want to use a 4-6 mm crochet hook, depending on how tight you want the stitches to be. If you’re unsure which size hook to use for your yarn, check the label for instructions, or find a list of suggested needle sizes here.
You’ll also need a tapestry needle (to weave in ends once your project is finished), scissors (to snip off your yarn), and stitch markers (to mark stitches when working up a pattern).
Is tapestry crochet hard?
Tapestry crochet can be a bit challenging at first, but with practice, it becomes easier! It involves switching between colours and alternating between which one you’re working with and which one you’re carrying through to create color patterns. If you’re comfortable with basic crochet stitches like single crochet, you can learn tapestry crochet by starting with simple designs and gradually working up to more complex patterns. The key is to keep your tension even and practice switching colors smoothly.

What type of yarn should I use?
It really depends on your preference! A few great, affordable options are DROPS Paris (100% cotton, worsted) weight) and Lang Yarns Merino 120 (light worsted) and 150 (sport).
Nothing beats buying yarn in-store, though – feeling fibres IRL makes such a difference, and you won’t have to worry about the colours not matching expectations. If you happen to be in Amsterdam, make sure to check our guide on the best places to shop for locally produced and hand-dyed yarn.
